How To Remove Swirl Marks And Water Spots In One Step -

Today in the Detail Garage we're gonna go over an in-depth tutorial on how to remove swirl marks and scratches from any color vehicle. Swirl marks and scratches are often the biggest point to bring down the look of any car. That's because swirl marks and scratches diffuse the light, cause the paint to look old and neglected, and dramatically reduces the gloss of any paint color. We're going to use a one-step polishing method to improve the paintwork and erase any swirls and scratches from the finish. To do that, we're going to use Chemical Guys VSS: Scratch & Swirl Remover. This brand new product uses advanced technology to cut like a compound, and finish like a polish. This is a one-step product that works by hand, or machine. We're going to use VSS with the TORQ 10FX dual action polisher to refine the finish, and restore this red paintwork. Let's start from the beginning and break down the steps to removing swirls and scratches. Before I polish this 370Z, I'm going to do a 50/50 spot to show you the steps pros use to get good results. First, we have to clay bar the surface. The vehicle feels extremely rough and it's covered in tree sap. I'll use a Chemical Guys medium clay bar to remove any above-surface contaminants. Above-surface contaminants are anything like overspray, rail dust, brake dust, industrial fallout, or pollution. It's important to remove this before polishing because it will reduce the cutting power of the machine. So eliminate those contaminants from the paint before you start. Now that I've got my clay bar all set up, We can go ahead and start. We've already washed this car today, but we have several other videos that break down the wash process. Now that the surface is clean, I'll use a quick detail spray to saturate the surface. You can use clay lube or detail spray for proper lubrication. I'll take my clay bar and gently scrub the surface. This will pull off all the contamination that's on the surface. There are two types of contamination: above-surface contaminants and below-surface contaminants. Below-surface contaminants are things like stains, etching, and any contamination that isn't on top when the paint feels smooth. Above-surface contaminants are things like rail dust, overspray, bird droppings, and any industrial contaminants that are stuck on the paint. You can see my clay bar is already turning a brown color because I'm pulling off the contamination to make the paint feel smooth. On our website, ChemicalGuys.com we feature a wide selection of clay bars and clay mitts, so if you're looking for the proper clay bar or mitt for your application, check out our website to find the right tool for you job. I prefer the clay bar because it's easy to grip and it conforms to every surface. I don't want to forget the lower panel. Now that I have the surface completely clayed and decontaminated, I'm going to put my clay bar away inside the container to make sure it doesn't get dirty. Then grab a premium microfiber towel to dry off the surface. Now that I clayed the surface, I'll feel it with a bare hand to ensure there's no contamination left. This paint feels smooth as glass, and it's ready to be polished. Let's get started on the polishing process. Just for you guys watching at home, I'm going to put a 50/50 tape line to show the before/after. That way you can easily see the difference on screen. When you're polishing any type of paint, you don't need to put any tape down like this. This is only for demonstration purposes. Now let's start polishing. My tool of choice is the TORQ 10FX dual action polisher. You can use a rotary or any type of machine polisher you choose. I'm using a dual action polisher because it will minimize the amount of pressure and work on the paint. Only the dual action polisher can do a one-step polish. That's where we cut like a compound, but finish like a polish. Back when polishing was becoming mainstream, it was the industry standard to do a two or three-step job. That's where you use a compound, a cutting cutting polish, and then a finishing polish. The newer abrasive technology found in VSS Scratch & Swirl Remover allows us to do a one-step polish because the abrasive break down to finish finer. This is a major advancement to get detailing done a lot faster. I'll plug in my machine and get my pad ready. I'm going to use an Orange Hex-Logic Cutting Pad. You can also use a Green, White, or Microfiber cutting pad for this job. I'm going to use an Orange Cutting Pad because it will cut more of the swirls and scratches out. This car was built in 2011, but it has heavy swirls and scratches over the entire vehicle. So let's take care of that today. Now that I've got the pad set on the machine, I'll take the Scratch & Swirl Remover, shake it up, and squeeze 5 - 6 dots on the pad. Machine polishing gives faster and better results than polishing by hand. I'll also use some detail spray to lubricate and prime the pad for a smooth start when polishing. I'll polish this area here, then we'll inspect the work if needs any more polishing, then show the results. I'll spread the polish on speed setting 1, then bump it up to 6 to make sure the polish breaks down and removes all the swirls. So now that we finished our polishing I'll buff off any excess polish. Scratch & Swirl Remover works so well that you only have to use a little bit of polish, and when you're done there should be barely any polish to remove. That's because the compound breaks down to finish like a polish. Now I'll remove my tape, pull the car in the sun, and show you the before/after difference. Now you'll see how well Scratch & Swirl Remover removes swirls, scratches, and oxidation from any color. We'll pull the car outside to show you the difference! Now you've seen the results we got with a one-step polishing using VSS Scratch & Swirl Remover. We pulled out all the swirls and scratches and get about 95% defect removal. Plus we restored a deep warm luster to the red paint. When we removed all the swirls and scratches, we improved the reflectivity of the paint.
